SCHEDULE

  • Application Deadline: August 16, 2010
    • Application must be received by the date.
  • Preliminary Screening: Screening based on scores
    • Result will be announced on September 1, 2010 at the website of the organizer.
    • Around 6 candidates will advance to the final.
  • Final: Judgment based on public performance
    • Rehearsals: October 9th, 2010.
    • Final: October 10th, 2010.
    • Performer: ARTE MANDOLINISTICA conducted by Yasunobu Inoue

PRIZE

  • First Prize: 200,000yen
    • ARTE MANDOLINISTICA will request the first prize winner to compose another new piece with commition fee 200,000yen.
  • Second Prize: 150,000yen
  • Third Prize: 100,000yen

WORKS FOR APPLICATION

  • Works must be composed for 6 parts (Mandolin I, Mandolin II, Mandola, Mandoloncello, Guitar, and Contrabass) of mandolin orchestra, or 5 parts (excludes Mandoloncello).
  • Works must not include wind or percussion parts, and duration of the works must be approximately 10 minutes.
  • The number of the orchestra members must be around 50. (Applicants can specify the number of the members.)
  • Works must not have been announced to public before the competition.
  • An applicant must apply only one work.
  • It is not allowed to make the recording or the performance of the applied work open to public before the final of the competition.
  • It is possible to entry regardless of age and nationality.
  • The applied work can be a suite, when the total duration is approximately 10 minutes.
  • The way of playing, such as tremolo, picking, or, pizzicato, must be noted on the score. Notation is up to applicants. If the work needs particular ways of playing, the concrete way of playing must be described on the score.

NOTICE

  • Applicants can submit the work by the photocopy of the original score.
  • The duration and the tempo (described with metronome or other ways) of the work must be written on the score.
  • The title of the work and the name of the applicant must be written on the cover of the score. Do not write them in the inside of the score.
  • Time of the rehearsal on Oct. 9th is 60 minutes per a work. The applicant must attend in principle. The applicant from outside Japan can skip the rehearsal.
  • The applicant is not allowed to change, to correct or to touch up the scores after submitting. If inevitable changes are found in the rehearsal, the applicant can change, correct or touch up the score after the organizer’s permission.
  • The applicant is not allowed to contact the performer before the rehearsal on Oct. 9th.

JUDGMENT PROCEDURE

  • Preliminary Screening: Screening based on the scores
    • The works are rated either A, B or C (A is the best score).
  • Final: Judgment based on public performance
    • The works are rated marked out of 50 points.
    • Judging committee which includes 9 judges takes charge of the judgment under the judgment policy.
    • The final result will be decided through discussions by the judges according to the scores.
    • The average score of 7 judges out of 9 will be the final score, since the maximum and minimum scores will be excluded to reduce bias.
    • The list of marks will be open to the public.
    • Judges are not allowed to evaluate those who studied under them in last five years.
    • Judges are not allowed to contact the applicants until the end of final competition.
    • The filnal decisions of the jury will not be overturned.

REGISTRATION FEE

  • 10,000 yen
  • The registration fee is not needed when submitting the work and the application sheet. The way of paying the entry fee is informed to the entrants after we accept the application.

THE WAY OF REGISTRATION

  • Mail the following documents. Applicants from outside Japan are allowed to send them via e-mail.
    • A score of the work to entry: A photocopy of the original score is allowed. A bound score is preferable. Either handwritten score or printed score is acceptable.

    • 2 copies of color photograph of the applicant are required: The size is not specified. It must be photographed within one year. (It is allowed to send picture in JPEG format via e-mail.)

TRAVEL AND LODGING EXPENSES OF THE FINALISTS

  • The organizer will pay traveling and lodging expense for the finalists on the following condition.
    • 50 percent of the traveling expense (for applicants from either Japan or outside Japan)
    • The expense of the lodging on Oct. 10th and 11th (The hotel is specified by the organizer.)

PUBLISH OF THE AWARDED WORKS

  • All the awarded works will be published by organizer.

TRAVELLING VISAS (Only for applicants from outside Japan)

  • If a visa is needed to enter Japan, the applicant is required to acquire it on one’s own responsibility.
  • An invitation letter will be issued by the organizer upon request.
  • When asking for the invitation letter, let the organizer know the following information:
    1. First name and surname in his/her native language
    2. Gender, Date of birth, Nationality, Occupation, Present address and Telephone number
    3. Traveling costs (Ticket price, hotel expenses and food cost)
    4. Name of the person who bears the traveling cost together with his/her gender, occupation, address, telephone number and the relationship with the applicant.

Tax on the cash prize

  • If the cash prizes are subject to be taxed under Japanese law, those prizes will be given after deduction of tax.

Copyrights

  • Rights on any performances in the competition and concerts in relation with this competition by the applicants including recording, broadcastings and photos belong to the organizer.
