The 7th Osaka International Mandolin Festival & Competition will be held! We will hold not only the regular solo mandolin competition but also the solo mandola, mandoloncello, mandolute competition!

FINAL (held on 9th October)

  • Free program with 20 – 30 minutes, including at least one piece of Carlo Munier.
  • Playing time includes entrance and exit.
  • No assignment for accompaniment.

Category B: Mandola, Mandoloncello or Mandolute Solo

  • No limit for ages.
  • One applicant can apply with one instrument among Mandola (tenor), Mandoloncello and Mandolute.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION (by recorded media)

  • Choose any part from the final piece (your choice), and record for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • No assignment for accompaniment.
  • You can apply with a part or one movement of whole tune, but in this case, you need a clear notification to tell us which part you chose.

FINAL (held on 9th October)

  • Free program for 15 – 20 minutes, including the part you recorded in preliminary exam.
  • Playing time includes entrance and exit.
  • No assignment for accompaniment.

  • Please pay the fee by July 30th by bank transfer.
  • If the fee is not paid by the due date, your entry will be canceled.
  • Applicants take the transfer charge, and we do not return the entry fee in any situations.
  • You have to pay the fee even if you turn down after the preliminary exam.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Send recorded MD or CD-R and the application form with your photo to:

  • Note that the deadline is July 19th, 2011.
  • Applicants from abroad can apply with e-mail in which the MP3 of the recording is attached.

  • Notify your program in the application form.
  • You can change the pieces or the order by July 30th.
  • A photo should be sent by snail mail, or it can be JPEG format sent by e-mail.
  • The recorded playing should be within 3 months of application date and you cannot make any editing.
  • Especially you are not allowed to combine two playing by editing.
  • If we find the trace of editing on your recording, your entry will be cancelled.
  • We may require resubmission when the recording quality is low.

JUDGMENT PROCEDURE

  • Preliminarily examination of both categories
    • Judges will select among entries without knowing the entry names.
    • 12 entries in category A will go to the semi-final, and 8 entries in category B will go to the final.
    • Judges score each entry by three accounts (A, B and C).
  • Category A
    • Full points in the semi-final is 25 to compulsory and self-chosen each (50 total).
    • Final is only self-chosen pieces, with 50 points.
    • The final selection depends on the total score from semi-final and final (100 points) and the winner will be chosen by eight judges.
    • The highest and lowest points form judges are eliminated and the average of the rest points is calculated.
  • Category B
    • 50 points for the final. Calculation will be the same with that of category A.
  • Notes
    • 2 points are reduced when your play runs over.
    • Results will be open to public.
    • A judge cannot evaluate the entries who have learned under him (from preliminary exam to the final).
    • Program should be different between semi-final and final.
    • You are not allowed to complain to the judges.

WORKS FOR APPLICATION

  • Works must be composed for 6 parts (Mandolin I, Mandolin II, Mandola, Mandoloncello, Guitar, and Contrabass) of mandolin orchestra, or 5 parts (excludes Mandoloncello).
  • Works must not include wind or percussion parts, and duration of the works must be approximately 10 minutes.
  • The number of the orchestra members must be around 50. (Applicants can specify the number of the members.)
  • Works must not have been announced to public before the competition.
  • An applicant must apply only one work.
  • It is not allowed to make the recording or the performance of the applied work open to public before the final of the competition.
  • It is possible to entry regardless of age and nationality.
  • The applied work can be a suite, when the total duration is approximately 10 minutes.
  • The way of playing, such as tremolo, picking, or, pizzicato, must be noted on the score. Notation is up to applicants. If the work needs particular ways of playing, the concrete way of playing must be described on the score.

NOTICE

  • Applicants can submit the work by the photocopy of the original score.
  • The duration and the tempo (described with metronome or other ways) of the work must be written on the score.
  • The title of the work and the name of the applicant must be written on the cover of the score. Do not write them in the inside of the score.
  • Time of the rehearsal on Oct. 9th is 60 minutes per a work. The applicant must attend in principle. The applicant from outside Japan can skip the rehearsal.
  • The applicant is not allowed to change, to correct or to touch up the scores after submitting. If inevitable changes are found in the rehearsal, the applicant can change, correct or touch up the score after the organizer’s permission.
  • The applicant is not allowed to contact the performer before the rehearsal on Oct. 9th.

JUDGMENT PROCEDURE

  • Preliminary Screening: Screening based on the scores
    • The works are rated either A, B or C (A is the best score).
  • Final: Judgment based on public performance
    • The works are rated marked out of 50 points.
    • Judging committee which includes 9 judges takes charge of the judgment under the judgment policy.
    • The final result will be decided through discussions by the judges according to the scores.
    • The average score of 7 judges out of 9 will be the final score, since the maximum and minimum scores will be excluded to reduce bias.
    • The list of marks will be open to the public.
    • Judges are not allowed to evaluate those who studied under them in last five years.
    • Judges are not allowed to contact the applicants until the end of final competition.
    • The filnal decisions of the jury will not be overturned.

REGISTRATION FEE

  • 10,000 yen
  • The registration fee is not needed when submitting the work and the application sheet. The way of paying the entry fee is informed to the entrants after we accept the application.

THE WAY OF REGISTRATION

  • Mail the following documents. Applicants from outside Japan are allowed to send them via e-mail.
    • A score of the work to entry: A photocopy of the original score is allowed. A bound score is preferable. Either handwritten score or printed score is acceptable.

    • 2 copies of color photograph of the applicant are required: The size is not specified. It must be photographed within one year. (It is allowed to send picture in JPEG format via e-mail.)

TRAVEL AND LODGING EXPENSES OF THE FINALISTS

  • The organizer will pay traveling and lodging expense for the finalists on the following condition.
    • 50 percent of the traveling expense (for applicants from either Japan or outside Japan)
    • The expense of the lodging on Oct. 10th and 11th (The hotel is specified by the organizer.)

PUBLISH OF THE AWARDED WORKS

  • All the awarded works will be published by organizer.

TRAVELLING VISAS (Only for applicants from outside Japan)

  • If a visa is needed to enter Japan, the applicant is required to acquire it on one’s own responsibility.
  • An invitation letter will be issued by the organizer upon request.
  • When asking for the invitation letter, let the organizer know the following information:
    1. First name and surname in his/her native language
    2. Gender, Date of birth, Nationality, Occupation, Present address and Telephone number
    3. Traveling costs (Ticket price, hotel expenses and food cost)
    4. Name of the person who bears the traveling cost together with his/her gender, occupation, address, telephone number and the relationship with the applicant.

Tax on the cash prize

  • If the cash prizes are subject to be taxed under Japanese law, those prizes will be given after deduction of tax.

Copyrights

  • Rights on any performances in the competition and concerts in relation with this competition by the applicants including recording, broadcastings and photos belong to the organizer.

    (The score is published from ARTE MANDOLINISTICA.)

Final

  • The contestants must perform self-chosen programs, which lasts for at least 20 minutes.
  • The contestants must enter the stage, tune, perform and leave within 30 minutes.

  • First Prize 200,000 yen and extra prizes (Noguchi Minoru handmaid mandolin)
  • Second Prize 100,000 yen and extra prizes
  • Third Prize 50,000 yen and extra prizes

REGISTRATION FEE 10,000 Yen

  • Applicants will be charged registration fee after their entry is accepted.
  • If registration fee is not paid by the appointed day, the application will become invalid.
  • Applicants are requested to bear the bank handling charge.
  • The registration fee is not refundable under any condition.
  • Applicants must pay even if they decline the semi-final after the preliminary screening.

ABOUT PRELIMINARY SCREENING

  • Performance must be recorded within 6 months of the application day. Editing or cutting the recording is prohibited, especially during the performance. If a trace of the editing or cutting is found in the recorded performance, the applicant will be disqualified. Applicants may be required to submit another recording when the environment of the recording sounds to be poor or the microphone sounds to be far from the performer.
  • The applicants must record the compulsory piece on either MD (mini-disc) or CD-R. The applicants from outside of Japan are allowed to submit the recordings via e-mail in mp3 format.(

  • The names of the players won’t be told to the judges.
  • Around 12 applicants advance to the semifinal.
  • The performances are rated either A, B or C.
    A: qualified
    B: neither qualified nor unqualified
    C: unqualified

JUDGING PROCEDURE
Semifinal

  • The performances of the compulsory piece are marked out of 25 points.
  • The performances of the competitors’ choices are also marked out of 25 points.
  • The sum of the two performances is the players’ point.

Final

  • The performances are marked out of 50 points.
  • The performances of the competitors’ choices are also marked out of 25 points.
  • The sum of the two performances is the players’ point.

Common

  • The average score of 7 judges becomes the final score of the contestant, since the maximum and minimum scores will be excluded to reduce bias.
  • The final ranking will be decided through discussions by the 9 judges according to total scores of the semifinal and the final. (The score goes up to 100 points.)
  • If the time of the performance is exceeded, 2 points are subtracted from the score.
  • The list of marks will be open to the public.
  • Judges are not allowed to evaluate those who studied under themselves in last five years.
  • Judges are not allowed to contact the entrants until the end of final competition.
  • Contestants are not allowed to play a same piece in the semifinal and the final.
  • The decisions of the jury are final.

GALA CONCERT OF THE WINNERS

  • The organizer is to hold gala concerts in 2009 and the winners (first to third place) must perform in them.
  • The program of the concert is decided through discussion between the winners and the organizer.
  • The organizer will guarantee the performance fee of 100,000 yen per one concert and bear the transportation cost and accommodation cost for the concert.
  • The costs related to the accompanist must be paid by the winners themselves.
    • If a visa is needed to enter Japan, the entrant is required to acquire it him/herself.
    • An invitation letter will be issued by the organizer upon request.
    • When asking for the invitation letter, let the organizer know the following data:
      • First name and surname in his/her native language
      • Gender, Date of Birth, Nationality, Occupation, Present address and Telephone number
